Looking for a James Smith is almost impossible. Our JAMES C. SMITH was born in Woolwich area (Preston) in 1801 as per his Muskegan, Michigan census prior to his death in 1887. He MAY have been the son or grandson of a Samual and Sara Smith and is father MAY have been Ward Smith. Sara's maiden name was Ward. History indicated a road was build through to the Grand River by "Smith and Ward" - is this a coincidence? James C. Smith married Elizabeth Baer and after her death he married Julia Letso

The man next to him I now believe to be his brother Louis Bertalan. The very tall young man in the rear and the girl in front of him are probably his (Louis') children. The young boy in the front and the two younger girls are my great-grandfather's children from his second marriage...my grandfather's half-siblings.
