I don't remember not knowing my dad was adopted. I don't remember an earth-shattering revelation that my grandparents were not my grandparents. I vaguely remember my dad explaining what "adopted" meant, but it didn't seem like a big deal. If you asked him, my dad would tell you the very few things he remembered about his siblings and his dad, his grandmother and step-grandfather and that he remembered almost nothing about his mom, except that she was hardly ever around. Here are a few of thi

The founder members are delighted to announce the launch of The Surname Society - the online society for individuals, groups and associations with an interest in surname studies, regardless of their location in the world, the surname they are studying, or their level of research expertise.

Here's another photo from my grandmother's house. I believe these people where somehow related to my great-grandparents Janos Peto and Esther Liska or maybe just friends.
My grandmother used to make these amazing cookies for special occasions. They are called Franz Joseph Cookies and supposedly took their name from the famous Emperor of Austria. I’m not really sure the back story on how my grandma got this recipe but it was a family favorite and one that had great pomp and circumstance around the making of the cookies. She resisted giving the recipe to anyone for many years and finally when she was well into her late 80s, she gave me the recipe. When I make them,
I have a few family pictures that I was able to scan after the passing of my Mother. However, she was the last living member of her family that would know anyone in the photos. They are not labeled and I would like to ask if anyone recognizes anyone in the photos.

Since women could not vote for a very long time in our current society, I want to ask you, "Do You Vote"?
Some blogging people on Facebook today on the far east coast were mentioning the young and some of the very old whom have trouble attempting to get to the polls and vote on meaningful subjects or even caring.
Decided that voting was my topic for today. Does your family or did your family keep you informed of voting practices and topics that would affect their lifestyles? Thereby you

religion played a much stronger role in the up coming holidays. We were taught Halloween or Holy Evening came to scare away the evil spirits from the graves of our fallen members. We celebrated All Saint's Day the following morning and All Soul's Day the day after that.

I just took a look at my blog this morning and realized it’s been almost 4 months since I wrote anything. My commitment has always been to try for twice a month and I have alerts set on my calendar to remind me of that commitment.
I think that after finishing my documentary and screening it at the end of May, I was just pretty wiped out and creatively drained. I’d worked on the film for 3 years and the work that went into promoting the screening and handling the media inquiries was more work than

Yes, it was a shout out to wake you up to being aware how much a society can assist you if they are an active group.
Even if home bound you can get a lot of helpful information from your local group. Many times you can get help from away grou

Hi everyone,
Yes, the big question is,"do you belong?" If you have been doing research for at least one year, you have been getting your feet wet. You are learning the ropes and it is time to step up for some real help.
Having advocated one should belong to your local society for many years now, I am asking do you belong to yours?
Last time I asked this, responses were our society died, no one helps others, we do not have one. Those were the biggest feed back answers I received.
Ok, m
Looking for a James Smith is almost impossible. Our JAMES C. SMITH was born in Woolwich area (Preston) in 1801 as per his Muskegan, Michigan census prior to his death in 1887. He MAY have been the son or grandson of a Samual and Sara Smith and is father MAY have been Ward Smith. Sara's maiden name was Ward. History indicated a road was build through to the Grand River by "Smith and Ward" - is this a coincidence? James C. Smith married Elizabeth Baer and after her death he married Julia Letso
