Update to "What Do You Do ?"

This is an update to an earlier post "What Do You Do ?" where I talked about finding a gedcom online and not knowing the resources or who posted it. Well I contacted the "poster" and got a reply, but he didn't exactly elaborate on his sources or the work overall. The answer's I was looking for sort of went "unanswered". Kind of makes me suspicious but hey, genealogy is a constant work in progress and I informed the person that if I discover mistakes I would let them know and they could make adjust

Finding Your Family Online

In the news yesterday is a story about a couple who are engaged and planning to wed soon. What makes this story really unusual is that they have the same name, Kelly Hildebrandt, and they met on Facebook.

One night (female) Kelly was bored and typed her name into Facebook to see what came up. Up popped Kelly Hildebrandt but it was a guy and he was in Lubbock Texas. She sent him a note that said “Hi, We had the same name. Thought it was cool.” He “thought she was pretty cute” and on it went.

She Walked This Earth

I've learned from my research over the last two years that my paternal great great grandmother Catherine Josephine Connelly Jones was a survivor of the first degree.  Born in County Leitrim, Ireland, about 1829, she endured the Great Hunger.  A letter found in her Civil War Widow's Pension file came all the way from Mohill, County Leitrim, from the priest who married Catherine and her husband James R. Jones in 1849.  Nearly 15 years later, her remebered them both well.  The information that prov

Looking For George's Father

George died in 1867 in Brown Hill Workhouse in Liverpool, his marriage certificate says his father was William and he was a plumber. I cannot find George on any census, his occupation in 1865 according to his sons birth certificate is seaman also on his death certificate. In 1861 again on one of his childrens birth certificate he was an Engine Driver, I suspect from where his family was living in 1861 he might have worked at the docks.

I signed up to take the class on Social Networking for Genealogists.  A couple of days ago, I received Drew Smith's book, Social Networking for Genealogists, and I have already read the first chapter on RSS feeds, and I am off and running.  I have already started my Google Reader page, and have accessed numerous feeds, some genealogy and some political.  I suspect that I will have to live very long to read all of these RSS feeds.

The last time I worked ahead in my book was when I was in second g

While searching for some information on my paternal side I stumbled across a gedcom that had been uploaded on Ancestry.A familiar name caught my eye that was my 2nd great grandfather so upon closer examination of the gedcom I discovered it covered a section of my paternal line all the way back to my 9th great grandfather. We're talking over 400 years and a trip to Scotland and England probably and years worth of research and not to mention a dollar amount and all the hours involved. If the informa

Preserving Your Family History

Most genealogy researchers will tell you that they are searching not only to find out about their history but also to keep their family’s history alive for future generations. So, now that we have those research documents, bits of scrap paper, newspaper clippings, photos, e-mails and other assorted bits of “research”, how do we preserve them for future generations? There are a number of options. Here are a few:
1.) Scrapbook - take those precious old photographs and preserve them in an archival,

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted anything here and while I have been very busy with work and new clients, I have felt a missing of my creativity and inspiration. It occurred to me over the weekend that the source of my ennui was the recent deaths of 4 people I knew within the time-span of two weeks. These were not old people, peers of my parents, who were battling long illnesses and the gentle creep of old age, but my own peers, (give or take a decade) that left suddenly, with little knowledge

What Does it Mean to be Connected

I recently had the honour of putting a family history book together for a friend. Her uncle was turning 80 and this was to be a special gift for him. His sister is edging towards 80 herself and as an aging grandma, was eager to get her memories into a format that would preserve them for her grandchildren and generations yet to come. Their father was a soldier in both world wars. An amazing story in and of itself. He was wounded in WW1 so was not able to go back into the field in WW2. Instead, he

My first blog post.

Not really sure what to write here, but I guess I will start at the beginning. I have been doing family history research since I was in high school, but I wasn't the least big organized or educated about it. Of course I kick myself now for not having been more methodical then when my grand-parents were still alive. But, going through life feeling regret is no way to get anything done. So, I've just get to nip that in the bud and forge ahead.

I am now 41 years old and definitely have matured in my
