And they are all different! Or so it seems. How many different ways are there to enter Arlington Cemetery? Or to spell Massachusetts? (I had to spell check it, so I hope it is right?)However, the thing that surprised me most were the number of occasions where t

Pinkerton Tavern GhostsA Post for Halloween! In October, thoughts of ghosts and witches come to mind. There were plenty of accused witches, even one who was found guilty in the 1600’s, and New Hampshire has its share of ghosts. When we first moved to Londonderry over 25 years ago, the first ghost we heard about was the one haunting the Pinkerton Tavern, in Derry. At the time, this building was an unfinished furniture store, and then a series of restaurants, now “The Pinkerton Tavern.”The Pinkerto

Preview -- a genealogist looks at Windows 7

While my copy of Windows 7 has been ordered and is on its way, I have been looking at the reviews. Bear in mind that the previews and early reviews for Windows Vista were all over hyped, I began looking to see if the glow of the initial release of Windows 7 had begun to dim. I remember the introduction of Windows Vista and clearly recall that there were multiple sources in the genealogical community that were panning the program and telling users to wait to upgrade. I was one who waited so long

The following article is reprinted from "Facts & Genes"The ancestral country for your surname is England. The fact that the surname found in almost every county, plus the fact that there are over 17,000 persons with the surname in the 1881 census for England and Wales, indicates that this is a multiple origin surname. Good Morning!

Hello! My name is Douglas Edward Noblehorse. When it comes to genealogy, I've taken the road heavily traveled - I didn't consider genealogy a productive pursuit until after my father, Earnest Robert Payne, passed away in December 2004. My biological mother, Virginia Mae Gulick, had passed away in March 2008, while my stepmother, Jennie Lee Wilson, passed away in November 1994.In my defense (such as it is) I had always been told and believed that my mother Virginia had been adopted as a child.
