Good Morning!

Hello! My name is Douglas Edward Noblehorse. When it comes to genealogy, I've taken the road heavily traveled - I didn't consider genealogy a productive pursuit until after my father, Earnest Robert Payne, passed away in December 2004. My biological mother, Virginia Mae Gulick, had passed away in March 2008, while my stepmother, Jennie Lee Wilson, passed away in November 1994.In my defense (such as it is) I had always been told and believed that my mother Virginia had been adopted as a child. If you are running Windows 95 on a ten year old (or older) PC storing your genealogy files in Personal Ancestral File Version 4.0, you probably aren't reading this post and likely don't know or care about the latest in software and hardware releases. But if you are like me and have a scanning project where you have tens of thousands of files, including video, audio, and photos, you may be interested in looking for a new computer. One of the issues driving new acquisitions is the overwhelming pre

What's it about advertising?

I can't understand what so many people hate -- literally hate -- about advertising. First of all, it greases the skids of the economy. It brings sellers together with potential buyers. It helps buyers know about what's available and some of the pertinent data including price. It helps make purchasing decisions. It helps sellers sell and thus stay in business and do such things as provide a boost to our economy. Read that as jobs for people who manufacture, ship, and sell, etc..In an environment

Does anyone know how to remove the Gifts thing from 'My Page'?I have moved it to the bottom, where it is less intrusive, but I am concerned that any number of unwanted gizmos could be added without any say from the individuals on whose pages they are being placed. It is not a nice development.William

How my Windows 7 installation went

As you know, I've been pretty excited to install Microsoft's new operating system, Windows 7. It was released today. Early this morning I checked out different software store's websites to see if they had any great specials. To my surprise, many of the stores said the software was already out of stock. I quickly got in my car and headed for the stores.Click here to continue reading the entire article.

So maybe Grandpa didn't run off and join the circus, after all. Maybe he ran off and joined a faith-based community. In many cases family members did abandon families to join some sort of community or communal organization. There's definitely a story in there: Did he or she leave the family because the faith required it, did the family choose to stay behind, or did the family reject the person adopting a particular faith? Whatever the reason, when a family member drops off the radar, researchers

Last April (08) my son and my MOM and I went for a drive and to dinner in Bodega Bay. We drove around where the boats are now all parked instead of where they were when I was a youth. We went out on the Head and Al took many pictures of the bay, the ocean, the animals. We saw deer, rabbits, squirrels, and many birds. There was this one seagull that decided to be a friend, or entertain us.The Seagull flew down and landed on the hood of the car while we were taking pictures it walked around the ho

Parks often have a genealogical connection. Detweiller Park, in Peoria, Illinois, has the distinction of being connected to several local families. A large number of family names surface while reminiscing about this park.In November 1927, Thomas H. Detweiller donated 661 acres to the park district. While the park carries the Detweiller name, it is in honor of Thomas’s father, Captain Henry Detweiller.Henry Detweiller was born in Alsace Lorraine. His parents, Christian and Catherine (Shertz) Detw

Welcome to the Heart of the Family

Doors are more than just doors.....Perhaps this cryptic statment would benefit from some clarification. Any one of us could look at a door and say, "that's an aluminum frame with screen to keep bugs out and let the breezes in. Or..."what a grand slab of carved wood with leaded glass inserts and gleaming hardware.I, on the other hand, look at the doors in my family's two different homes and see something entirely different. The ones which I keep in memory lack any level of grandiosity. They're de

Amazing week for genealogy!

This has been quite a week! Over the weekend my aunt visited and she lent me some photos and documents, which I scanned. She has the most amazing collection of family information. I still can't believe some of the things she has! I am so grateful that she shared it with me. I even found the name of the town in Germany that one of my great-great-grandmothers was born in. Now if I could just read it! I also borrowed my father's baby book, and my grandmother put information in there about other fam

Research success

I recently planned (and have since taken) a trip to Mildura, Victoria, which was going to include some family history research. I recently purchased the death certificate for Maria GROSE, my 3 x Great Grandmother, whose death was registered at Mildura in 1945. (This is a line for various reasons I have not done a lot of research on). I was going to visit the cemetery and visit her final resting place. Never presume. The prompt arrival of the certificate revealed she was in fact buried at Amherst
