Photo management software for genealogists

Genealogists are no different than any other computer user who wants to store photos or scanned images on their computer system, butthey may have a greater need to specifically identify the images.Fortunately, there are dozens of programs, some of which are free, thatcan help organize images. One issue that arises immediately is the needto maintain image associations. As one commentator wrote recently, shehad an old picture album from a relative and wanted to maintain therelationship among the p

I recently returned from the 2010 Association of Personal Historians Conference held in Victoria, British Columbia. The theme of this conference was “Voices of the Elders” and was named as such to “honor the First Nations, the first peoples of Canada, on whose traditional territory we met, as well as the elders of all nations, whose stories we help preserve.”

I was just reading about a woman whose computer was acting up so she called a computer technician out to her home to save her from the dread ‘blue screen.’ Apparently she had 10 years worth of genealogy research stored on her computer and NO BACKUPS! Just thinking about that makes me shudder.

If you’ve ever lived through a hard-drive crash, you know it is one of the scariest and most humbling experiences. We tend to relate to our computers as if they are smarter, stronger and infinitely invincib

The Wiki.FamilySearch.org website has been incorporated as part of the newer Beta.FamilySearch.orgwebsite. Presently, the Research Wiki, as it is commonly referred to,is growing at the rate of over 400 pages a day. It is my opinion thatthis website is quickly becoming the first place to go to for startingany research project. I am continually pleasantly surprised at theamount of information that is pouring into this website.

There are currently 43,557 articles and the start-up page has beenaccess

My New Family History Site

I've finally done it. After many years of collecting information about my family tree, I have once again attempted to put it on the internet. I didn't simply upload a gedcom file. I actually created the site page by page. I do not have everyone in my Legacy file on the site yet, but it's a start. I even scanned a few photos of my grandfather and linked a photo gallery page to his individual page. I've yet to link all of his siblings but mother and father are linked as well as his spouse, my rece

New features on Beta FamilySearch

It is certainly interesting to watch the changes as the Beta.FamilySearch.org website continues to grow and improve. Thanks to Sue Maxwell at Granite Genealogyfor quickly noticing the newest changes. It looks like many of theimprovements to the Search capability and Library Catalog that werediscussed at the Bloggers' Day in Salt Lake, have now been added. The actual announcement discusses the features in depth.

I like the new "Give Back" page. The link is indicated by the red arrow:

Thanks for asking! One commentator took pity on my plight of unendingscanning and questioned me about where I put all the stuff and keep itorganized. Very interesting questions. Very difficult answers.

Have you ever looked at ads for computers? Have you ever noticed thatthere are no cables in any of the pictures? Try it now. Go to Best Buyor Amazon and look for some kind of computer. Any kind will do. If youcan't think of one, try a Dell 3.0 Ghz GX. Do you see any cables? Now,what do you see when

The challenge of moving beyond PAF

Personal Ancestral File (PAF) is probably the most influential lineagelinked database program in the world. To quote BradJackman on LDSTech back in 2008," However, I think most genealogists will agree that PAF still holds amajor position in the field, and it's ease of use, simple GUI, and hugeuser base make it a force to be reckoned with, not some littlefreeware experiment to be swept under the rug." PAF has been considereda "freeware" program since about 2000 and was never very expensive evenbe

Lane Family Tombstone

Lane Family Tombstone

Pine Grove Cemetery, Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, New Hampshire.

William Lane, junior. and his wife Sarah Webster were my 8x Great Grandparents. Their names are on a 1681 list of the members of the 2nd Church in Boston, and sometime after that they removed to Hampton, New Hampshire. Sarah was William’s first cousin. They lived near Sarah’s father, Thomas Webster, near where Hampton Academy now stands. William Lane was a tailor. Deacon Joshua Lane was his son. I descend through
