February 2011

As I write this, I am sitting on a plane returning from a family reunion in California. My cousin celebrated his 70th birthday yesterday and several family members flew in for the occasion. My cousin's grandmother and my grandmother were sisters, so while I see him all the time (since he lives in the same building as my parents), his sisters and their families all live on the east coast and the only time we see each other is at weddings, funerals, and other special celebrations such as this.

For the past two blog posts I have been writing about archiving (How I Save and Archive My Digital Photos), and storing digital photos (How To Backup and Store Your Digital Photo Files.) My first post on this subject looked at how I created an architecture to name and archive digital photos. The second post looked at how to store and backup these files. In my final post on this topic, I’m going to talk about what to do with all these digital files; some ideas on how to share them with family and

DNA study

I would like to compare DNA results with two Robertson families that may turn out to be the same family.
1.  William Robertson that married Abigail Cleveland about 1787 - I believe this is the William Robertson that died in Gallatin county, Ky in 1823.

2.  And/or  the William Robertson that died in Frederick county, Va. about 1798.

Born Fighting: How the Scots Irish Shaped America, is a new television documentary based on a book by Senator James Webb of Viriginia, who is a direct descendant of Ulster Scots who immigrated to America. However, this two part program was first broadcast in the United Kingdom yesterday on 1 February 2011 on STV. It is produced by Scottish and Ulster Television and the Smithsonian Channel.

Before the siege of Derry in 1689, Scots Presbyterians flooded Northern Ireland, lured there by King James I

Last week I blogged about how I have been organizing and tagging all my digital photos during frequent 3 hour flights. I received several comments and questions from readers about what to do with those photos once they are tagged and organized into a meaningful architecture.
I find myself once again sitting on an airplane and thought I would take this time to address this issue, which is actually two different issues; how to safely store the images and how to use and share the images, rather tha

I have just received an email from The Sprague Project. These updates used to arrive every month or so, but it is now two years since the last one.

I know the project is still alive and well, not least because of the webmaster, A. Arnold Sprague's, generous contributions to TNG users, but was becoming concerned that perhaps old age is creeping up on Dick Weber.

For those not familiar with the project, the Sprague Database has grown to include nearly 340,000 Sprague family members, The project has

Digital memory is measured in bits and bytes. I am not going to get into a discussion of binary numbers and showing how to calculate in decimal and binary, but to understand computer memory and digital memory of all kinds, it is helpful to recognize the terminology and the relative sizes of the steps between different levels of storage media. Before showing the illustration, there are one or two points that need menti
