St. Patrick's Day Wishes

There is much written about this event and holiday.  It seems it is observed in many places besides the USA and Ireland.

Green Beer, Cornedbeef and Cabbage, Shamrocks, Shamrock Shakes (mint shake Mc Donald's), etc.  I think most drive in's have them.  Did he drive the snakes out of Ireland? Did his staff change?  I sure can not say but I can say Happy Anniversary to my brother and his wife for they married on this day.  Luck of the Irish Maybe,

We have more Irish and Scot

Was Roger Williams too pure for the Puritans, and what does that have to do with Rhode Island? Why did it take Augustine Herman ten years to complete the map that established Delaware? How did Rocky Mountain rogues help create the state of Colorado? All this and more is explained in Mark Stein's new book.

New Mysteries

I'm starting to unravel information on my father's side of the family.  My maiden name of Pooler.

For a long time my father's family specifically the Poolers have been a big mystery to me.   My father enlisted in the Navy in 1950.  He served during the Korean War.  His home port for many years was San Diego, California.  He was stationed at Great Lakes, Chicago where he met my mother in 1953.  She was sixteen.  They saw each other as much as they could and were engaged after 6 months.  The enga

Staten Island Johansens

Hi, all,

I am the family historian for the Johansen-McSherry family.  Unlike many of the Norwegian immigrants who settled in Brooklyn, our side of the Johansens settled on Staten Island, New York.  I know some things about our Johansen side, but am always eager to find out more.

If you have come across any information that you think would be helpful to me, please post a message  here.  Also, if I can be of any assistance to any of you, please let me know.

Thanks,  Gerry

Are you ready to jump into the future and bring the past with you?

There are things we can do online today that we could not do several years ago.

We can easily share our surnames and thoughts and knowledge with each other.

In some mediums we can share pictures and documents which in the past we could not.

Sometimes seeing is believing and it makes the topic make more sense.

Do you think we could have a chat showing how to Site Your Sources?

Do you think we could teach someone how to use a new Geneal

One of the things that we have learned from the Who Do You Think You Are series is that not everything on our ancestors is available online. Remember that large document on Reba's English ancestors from the 1600s? Or the marriage register that awaited Martin Sheen in Italy? Or the newspaper articles on Blair Underwoods gt gt gt grandfather Sauney, the conjurer?

What did these episodes all have in common? The celebrities had to travel to their ancestral homeland to find the information they were

Publicly Sharing My Research?

Making huge strides in my research lately. I have been able to knock down brick walls that have existed for 35 years...only to find there was another one behind it!

Pennsylvania has finally put death indices online and I was able to locate my missing great grandfather. Just waiting now for his actual certificate to come, assuring me that it really is him. I found what I think is my great grandmother also. The only CARGILL in the right time period with no first name, of course. We'll see when that

Virtual Ephemera?

Virtual Ephemera.

Although the two words may seem dissimilar – if not contradictory – they share a common bond that I would like to explore for a moment.

Wiktionary.com defines virtual as; "In effect or essence, if not in fact or reality; imitated, simulated". Click here for a link to the full definition.

Wikipedia.org defines ephemera as; "Ephemera are transitory written and printed matter not intended to be retained or preserved". Click here for link to the full article.

Part 3 of a series about capturing the joy of family events on video

Last week we covered the first of four phases used in creating multimedia productions to capture the joy of family events – concepting / scriptwriting. This week, I we will talk about phase two – pre-production and planning.

As Hal Landen puts it in his book titled Marketing With Digital Video, “Murphy’s Law works overtime in video production. If something can go wrong, it will. Your only defense is planning. Planning will help y
