John Jones and Mary Brown

John Jones (son of John Jones and Mary Doughty) and Mary Brown (daughter of Preserve Brown Jr. and Mary French) can be found in old Pennsylvania Quaker Meeting records, including their marriage.Gedcoms then lose them in regard to descendants from them. Many of the Brown family settled along the East Fork of the Susquehanna River and can be found along it from Wilkes-Barre downstream to Sunbury.I suspect that this John Jones is the John Jones who died in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in 1809.I am

On 11 August 1916 my grandmother, Erma Leona Heskett, was born the third daughter of William Dale and Nina Verne (Mossman) Heskett. They lived in Morrow county, Ohio, where the Heskett family had lived since the 1820;s. Soon after grandma's birth, Nina found out that she had TB. To be closer to her family, they moved to Sioux City, IA. Nina went into a hospital and grandma was taken care of by one of her uncles. On 10 Apr 1919, at the age of 33 Nina died, leaving behind 3 daughters, Blanche Eile

what I'm reading

I'm reading Grand Mothers by Nikki Giovanni, a really interesting collection of essays, short stories and poetry that she edited in the 1990s. I've always loved her poetry, and I grabbed this up when I saw it in my used bookstore. Its nice because I can read it slowly, as that how my kids let me read, LOL ;)Its cool, esp as I research my roots to read these words by people about their grandmothers, my relationship with my grandmothers is a mixed bag, but I make sure that my kids know their grand

uummm Hello?

Don't you get tired of having to pick titles and screen names and passwords? I sure do.I had started several groups on here, one of which was called, "Wiley - New Jersey". I was approached about it and asked if I'd be including variant spellings and different locations. My answer was, "no". To be honest, I am not all that interested in the name itself. It is Irish. Very cool. The more lines I have that are of Irish origins, the happier I am. It was my grandmother's maiden name and since I adored

Yesterday, Author Anita Wills joined our LowCountry Africana Group here at GenWise and posted an amazing narrative about her Great-Great Grandmother, Leah Ruth-Warner.Reading about the life journey of Leah Ruth-Warner left me in awe. I was speechless!I can neither imagine what she endured after being kidnapped from her native Guinea in 1830 or wrap my mind around Anita's TREMENDOUS research effort to discover it!What I love is that in Anita and other family "Griots", I see the rich, age-old trad

Genealogy and Other Disciplines

Genealogy can be generically defined as the study of family. For a genealogist, genealogy is defined in more detail and is different for each individual genealogist. Some genealogists only conduct one-name studies on one particular surname and never look into the other surnames in which they have ancestors. Other genealogists want to know about each individual ancestor and go into great detail to understand their lives and the times in which they lived. Genealogy for me is a way to understand hi

It started back when I took the AP American History class at Wachusett Regional High School in Massachusetts. When our teacher told our class we could all write a final paper on any topic (with her approval, of course) I knew that I was going to write about Queen Liliuokalani and how she lost the Hawaiian throne. I was the first student to ask to have my topic approved, and the teacher looked puzzled. It was a topic we barely covered in class, and there was nothing on the subject in our school o

Blogs-People Finders

So far my blog "The Hillman's of Elgin County" has repayed the time and effort I have put into it for the last two years. Last year a first cousin on my mother's side got in touch with me through the blog. I had not seen her since the early 1960's. My memory of her was of a little girl and it was quite gratifying to see and her from her and to find out about the rest of my uncle's family.Just this morning a second comment on my blog was from a daughter of my uncle Bruce's widow. Uncle Bruce was

I’m not a hunter. I’ve never fired anything more serious than a BB-gun at any living creature (and I never hit anything alive). One of my prized possessions, however, is a 19th Century black powder rifle.I came into possession of this firearm sometime after my Dad, also Deason Hunt, died back in the early 1980’s. Mother saw that I got it because it is a Hunt family relic. It belonged to my great grandfather, William “Billy” Marshall Hunt and has been in the family from the time he acquired it.On

Reflections on our most recent reunion

The fourth annual Gentner family reunion was held this past Sunday. If you have read my previous blogs, you know that I am somewhat worried about reunion apathy, particularly on the part of younger family members. The day actually started off on a sour note. Rain clouds were gathered and a light drizzle fell for part of the morning. When I arrived at at the reunion site I was greeted by a small contingent of family members who, before saying hello, made it clear how upset they were that there was
