James Keith/Keefe name change, 1878

This is an affidavit dated 22 Aug 1878, submitted by my great-great grandfather, James H. Keith, to the state of Illinois. This document revealed that James was actually born James H. Keefe, and that he had at sometime adopted the surname Keith without changing his name legally. We don't know what prompted him to change his name, nor do we know how it was revealed to the state that he had signed his marriage license illegally.
