Settling an Old Argument

One thing I will never forget about my childhood is the many occasions when the whole family got together at "Mamaherg's" for a holiday. Her house was way too small for everyone; nevertheless we all crowded in for a few hours of great family fun. The dining room table was always piled high with everything that would typically be raised in a large garden in rural north Alabama plus several different types of meat. The children would usually play outside either in the barn loft or perhaps ride bicycles around the house or play football. Occasionally we would get board and go inside to listen to the grownups talk. They all seemed to have an opinion about everything and most of them were not afraid to let it be known. At times it seemed that some of them really believed that whoever expressed their view in the loudest most forceful way was right. Of course no opportunity to prove your point was ever passed up. One of my uncles spent hours splitting one sweat gum log because his younger brother said it couldn't be done. My favorite argument was the one that always came up on the 4th of July. "Mamaherg's" birthday was on the 5th, but she was not real sure about the year. Was it 1909 or 1910? Years later, when I became interested in genealogy, this was one of the things I wanted to find out. I will tell more about this in my next post.
