One Way to Magnify Pages

One of the problems I know some of our members are having is with the size of the font in our GW Chat Room. Unfortunately, we cannot enlarge the font size because it is an application that Ning, the platform we use, provides us and it cannot be changed. We are looking into other options for a new Chat Room. One idea that may work for you when searching any site on the internet, including our Chat Room, is a computer mouse that Chat Host, Jayne McCormick told me about. You can check it out at http://tinyurl.com/lc7vnl. The website describes it as, “Plug in the compact receiver when you’re ready to work, then snap it into your mouse when you travel, saving hassle and battery life. Easily enlarge and edit details with the new Magnifier and scroll four ways with the innovative 4-Way Scrolling.”Jayne says that she has one for her PC, laptop, and mini laptop. “ I really love it. Nice size for my hand also.”

  • Hi, I'm very new to this, having been shamed by my daughter asking me about my Irish roots and realising how little I knew and what little I had done to find out more. So here goes. I would appreciate any help or suggestions, polite ones only please! The story goes that my family came to England from Cork around 1850. Edward his wife Bridget their two sons John and Michael Lyons. I know that both Edward and Bridget work in the papermills - Edward being a papermaker and Bridget a rag cutter. John was also a papermaker my gt gt gt grandfather was Michael. Michael married Eliza Callahan (not sure of the spelling, it was recorded as that on their wedding certificate by an Englishman as both were unable to write. Eliza was the daughter of Thomas Callahan who also worked as a papermaker. The only other things I know for sure is that Michael and Eliza settled in and around what is now Chilslehurst area of Kent. Michael worked as an engin driver and then an engineer - they had at least 5 children that survived William Edward Ellen (my Gt grandmother) Harriett and Michael Jnr. Can anyone enlighten my if they would have needed papers or embarkation doc to come over - if so how would I access these? Thanks a million for any help you can offer
  • I don't know if this has been mentioned, but just hit the 'Control" key and roll the 'Scroll' button (located in the center of the right and left click buttons on the top of your mouse). Roll the scroll forward or backward to change the size of the font / page. (Not sure that Mac has the scrolling button on their mouse,)
  • Hi there...I'm fairly new to the site and am still wading thru all the great info!! I just tried the Control + on my PC and it worked great!! Thanks for the tip!
  • Command + enlarges web pages on Firefox (and other browsers) on Mac. Should be something similar by now for Windows.
  • There is a little trick that comes with windows many people don't know about, hold down control and hit the plus sign, this will zoom in, to zoom out control and minus. Saves a lot of fuss.
  • There are also magnification software programs avail, such as

    DesktopZoom 3.4

DesktopZoom is a zoom program with lots of options: zoom around the mouse, zoom a fixed window, zoom the entire desktop and use the mouse inside the zoomed window. Make the original screen show through (transparency). Zoom with the magnification that you want. Save settings for the next time the program is started.

Version 3.4 has language support for French, German, Dutch & Czech.

OR products such as this that fit over your screen and magnify it:

    OR Windows XP has one:

Windows XP: Turn On and Use Magnifier
Magnifier is a display utility that makes the computer screen more readable. Learn how to turn on and use Magnifier in Windows XP.

NLarge New Full Screen Magnifier For Windows XP and Windows Vista ... The best free screen magnifier for Windows 2000 / XP is iZoom 1.1. ...

The best free screen magnifier for Windows 2000 / XP is iZoom 1.1. This screen magnifier supports 1.5 to 16 times magnification, tracks events in windows like moving mouse cursor, input caret, menus and focus.
iZoom also includes speech support, but on the Internet the maximum magnification is 3 times.

Dektopzoom is a good number two. A very small free full screen magnifier, that let you zoom in and out with the wheel of your mouse. It also magnifies and tracks the mouse cursor, but does not track other events in Windows.

Number three in the top of screen magnifier freeware for Windows is Magnifying Glass from Workers Collection. It runs on Windows 9x and higher and for Windows 2000 and higher users, it includes full screen magnification.
The mouse cursor is magnified, but windows events are also not tracked.
Because Desktopzoom is easier to use by visually impaied, than Mmagnifying Glas, this utility is at number three.

At number four and New in the area of full screen magnifiers is NLarge.

NLarege is with 100 KB a very small full screen magnification utility. This is because it uses the Microsoft Windows Presentation Foundation, already available on all Windows Vista releases and it will also work on Windows XP and Server 2003 after installing the free .NET Framework version 3.0.

Like with Desktopzoom, NLarge need no installation. Simply run the nlarge.exe file, press ALT + 1 and use the wheel on your mouse to zoom in and out.
  • I don't like comcast email either and I thank you for the hint on how to magnify print. We learn something everyday!
  • Glad it worked for you, Carol as all mice are not created equal. Funny how I discovered that little trick. It was quite by accident. I have Comcast Internet service and they changed Email format some months ago and I hated it. I was learning to live with it and one day I signed on and went to check my mail and the print was so tiny it was impossible to read. I complained to Comcast and they told me they don't support Firefox, my browswer, and had no suggestions. Then a miracle happened and somehow I had my finger on the control key and mouse wheel and lo and behold the print magically got larger. Since that day I have found many times I want bigger print and it couldn't be easier with that method. I'm gald I could share that tip with you. BTW, I still don't like Comcast's Email format but that's another subject not for this forum.
  • Thank you Stephanie I just tried this & love it I can now see things much clearer. Great - Great - Great - again Thank you
  • Another way of making the print larger is to hold down the CTRL key and scrolling at the same time on your mouse wheel. You can make things larger or smaller that way. Going forward on the mouse wheel makes the print larger and backward scrolling makes it smaller.
