As genealogists, we constantly refer to historical documents. In manycases, those documents many be subject to claims of copyright. It is fareasier to claim a copyright to an old document than to actually prove aclaim for breach of copyright. It is not uncommon to find references toa copyright for documents that are clearly, legally not subject to anypossible copyright. Unfortunately, most discussions of copyright issuesare rather more inclusive than exclusive, that is, the discussionemphasizes what is protected by copyright without clearly explainingwhat is not protected.
