As far as your record keeping, I presume you'd always want to take note of the fact in your software [Reunion for Mac] entries that someone is adopted. My concern is that someone still living and reviewing the online or published record might discover that fact and be both devastated and dumbfounded by the knowledge...especially if they were previously unaware. Are there any less conspicuous or more sensitive means of art to deal with the fact while preserving the accuracy of the information?
Never publish information about living people on line without specific permission, and even so, never post birth information or any other information that can lead to identity theft. Period. Personally, I just never publish anything about living people, to save a lot of problems.
Yes, as BJohnston says, you can tell Reunion that information is sensitive and also private. I believe that you must be sure that this setting works correctly (the ReunionTalk board has mentioned some problems), but if you have marked correctly, the information is not published.
My niece is adopted. A fact that was never hidden from her. Recently, she received a message via facebook stating "I hope Marj and Mohammad (my sister and brother-in-law) told you you were adopted 'cuz I'm your birth mother". Imagine the devastation if she was not!
After more careful review of the Reunion software options, I've discovered a means to declare a child status as "sensitive." So, I declared that adoption ought to be sensitive, and I presume it will be used for all such cases as it is not clearly related to the specific concern I had had.
