Scottish: Emigration and Immigration Records is the latest course in our Scottish Records Certificate. Written by Director of Scottish Studies, Morag Peers MSc, this Advanced Level course explores the records along with the ‘how and why’ of the movement of the Scottish population.

Explore emigration from Scotland pre and post 1850. Discussions will include the Jacobite Rebellions, Highland and Lowland Clearances, the transportation of criminals, and indentured servitude. You will look at passenger lists, crew lists, shipbuilding records, Canada’s Home Children as well opportunities for women who wished to emigrate.

The course includes in depth discussions of immigration to Scotland focussing on Irish Immigration, Italian Immigration, and Jewish Immigration.

Each module in the course contains important web links to supplement the text. These links may include reading material as well as audio/visual presentations to further your research and understanding of the subject matter. You will also find several books listed as recommended reading as you work through the course. The course material also includes several maps, timelines, and photographs which illustrate the information being presented.

Note: This course is written from a Scottish perspective. The term “emigration” is used throughout the material. Emigration refers to those leaving Scotland to goelsewhere. Conversely, “immigration” refers to those arriving in Scotland fromanother country or region.
