The update for “Canadian Wills Part 2 Plus Estate and Inheritance Records” has just been released!
The course has been rewritten and updated by Drew von Hasselbach, PLCGS. Drew is a mentoring professor for our Canadian Records Certificate and our German Records Certificate.
Wills and estate files are a useful tool in genealogical research. Not only are they excellent original sources filled with information, but they are also remarkable historical documents offering insight into the world as experienced by ancestors.
This course builds on the Basic Level Canadian: Wills-Part 1 as it delves deeper into the intricacies of researching wills and estate records. Rather than focusing heavily on course material, the emphasis is placed on case studies to increase familiarity with the documents. You will find examples of the documents and their transcriptions that are discussed throughout the course, as well as listings of websites to further your studies.
What You Will Learn:
Throughout the course you will find discussions around the many documents and duties regarding wills and estates. The included case studies offer valuable insights into more intricate cases.
Course modules include wills, obituaries, death notices and government gazettes. You will also explore succession duties, probate, coroner’s inquests and the role of public guardians and trustees. Several different types of wills are examined as well. You will find studies on Holographic and Nuncupative wills, land records in wills, and Indigenous estates. You will also look at some interesting wills such as one dollar bequests and the shortest will in England
This intermediate level course is included in our Canadian Records Certificate program. It can also be taken as an elective in any of our certificate programs.
